The fact that this book still has to be written is heart breaking as well as bone chilling. I am much older than this woman, born on a different continent, and into a different cultural background. The only thing that links our stories is that we are both black women. And the soul of the story is the same, some of the experiences are exactly the same, and all of the frustration is completely felt and understood. I am overwhelmed by ms. Lodge's ability to put into bold , succinct words concepts that I don't think I ever had the ability to manage. I thank her for that. I spent an hour writing this review because the tears would not stop mainly because of the world my children live in is even more difficult than the one I have inherited. History has shown however, that no matter how slow and convoluted progress is ,hope for a better tomorrow will prevail.

I like the way she writes, she angry and honest, open about all the details. I hope other people would read and try to understand the feelings of those they don't normally get the chance to hear.

Worthy, rigorous investigation about racism, how it developed and is a still a major problem in our societies. Goes deep to its roots and explains why it has been and still is so difficult to get rid of it.The book exposes and refutes prejudices with true data.I highly recommend it!

This book provides an eloquent and thought-provoking analysis of institutionalized, subtly insidious racism that must be acknowledged by everyone in order to be eradicated. Even though the British author focuses on racism in the UK, her findings and analyses applied to life in the USA, too (and I expect the same applies for many other countries). Highly recommended!

My unfamiliarity with the designations of British officials aside I found this work to be informative, very relatable, and extremely relevant for the current time. As a black American we often don’t know how “blackness” is treated in other parts of the world because we are so subsumed with the treatment here. In a sense this book starts as a bit of an origin story and then transforms into a nostalgic conversation you could have had with anyone in your family.

Racism is a big issue here in America. However, I shouldn’t be so naive to think it’s only an issue here. This is something that should be talked about everywhere. I enjoyed this book for giving me insight on the issues that are being dealt with in the UK. I’ve become more aware, and I want to share this book with others. It’s a must read for those who deny the harsh reality that is inequality. The fight against racism is far from being won.

Thought provoking book. The title grabs attention but of course she's talking to white people. The real issue is many don't listen even when you do speak.

Reñi Eddo-Lodge interacts with a an experience and concept that affects us all and shows how power can corrupt and create a narrative that disenfranchises so many that extends beyond the American Civil Rights Movement. I loveat how she is able to contextualize structural racism as a Brit and illuminate a history that has been more overshadowed than African American history in the United States. If you don't get uncomfortable reading this book you don't get just what it has to offer us or the challenge/mantle it issues to the definition of "whiteness" and how this standard affects everyone it touches. Powerful, bold work that is not afraid to be authentic in its feelings and experience or Challenge the status quo in numerous arenas that compose the structural illusion of "civilization". Bravo!
