This book John Paton --missionary to the New Hebrides (now is called vanuatu) is a detailed account of this awesome man who served that island (and a few others) in the late 1800,s.He was subjected to terrific problems with the bloodthirsty natives and on many occasions was face to face with death.My copy of this hardcover book was different than shown and was much lower in price.I must warn readers he is a self professed Calvinist (page 195),but his teaching does not express itself to that direction.This book is basically in 2 parts with the former his experiences on Tanna and the latter his experiences on Aniwa.I count 6 or 7 times he was given a chance to leave Tanna but because of his love for the people there stayed on.He had problems galore as he struggled with language,wicked traditions ,and extreme sickness.The type is rather small and is not written in an easy to read style in which case a more modern up to date coverage of his life can be had through a different publisher,mine was by 'the banner of truth'This is a very complete bio being edited by his brother James.It includes his parents life and experiences,his upbringing both at home and school and even includes 3 appendice,s with a complete index to the book for quick reference to any given topic in his life.A great book,I was inspired by his massive dedication to God in many,many dangerous situations.Some of us are light years ahead of others it seems in regards to commitment and faith.
Outside of the Bible, this is one of the greatest books you will read in your life. Moving, dramatic, challenging, touching, thoughtfully written, even funny, and dripping passionate love for Jesus on page after page. I felt like John Paton became a friend of mine as I was reading his story. It's amazing the bond and common thread that followers of Jesus share through the ages. It often brought me to tears and prayer that God could likewise use me to display His infinite worth.Additionally, this brand new hardcover from Banner of Truth, newly printed in 2013, is a beautiful edition of the book. Beautiful cover and a neat, kind of old-fashioned/antique look to it. Would make a great gift. THIS is the unabridged version. Others out there by other publishers are not complete.
If you like reading bio's of people that God soverignly used, then this is one of them. John Paton accomplished more in his life than most would ever dream of. I put him in the ranks of George Whitfield as one who truly lost his life for the sake of the gospel. Going to the South Pacific into a land where the people were cannibals, this story will really show the missionary's heart for the lost soul. Many people ask the question, what about the person in the jungle that has never heard about the gospel, what happens to them? John Paton went there and did that. I would recommend this book to anyone who might be considering going into the mission field as it shows the many hardships that are to be endured and what it means to give up all.
Wonderful story about an unusually dedicated and wise missionary. It is long, but I hated to have it end. I read it out loud to my wife while she did her neck-strengthening routine.
One of the best autobiographies ever written. You can literally allow it to fall open to any page, begin reading at any point on that page, and immediately be captured by the narrative. I highly recommend this book.
Love this autobiography! Amazing story of faith and trust in God abovemany many trials and adversaries. God's miraculous protection is awesome.
