Good translation area and probably useful. Remainder is a shadow of a normal DK Eyewitness travel guide. Very few pictures; maps are small, cover too wide an area, and could never be used for walking tours; and there are no exploded views of churches or museums. Information covers only a limited number of items per city, although these descriptions are well done. Although heavy, the paper version is preferable to the independent traveler.
DK has changed the format on their Eyewitness guides and they are simply unusable in their current form. Too bad, because I was very happy with them before.
I love the DK Eyewitness Travel series. The guidebooks give you everything you need! This one is organized. By regions of Italy: southern Italy, Rome and Lazio, etc. Within each section you get tons of color pictures guiding you to what to do and see, maps to help you get around, information about getting there, phone numbers, hours of operation, and transportation information. I took a trip around Europe in college with the Europe DK book several years ago and that is a good general book, but if you are just going to Italy, this book is detailed and will give you so much information it will be the only book you need!
I usually buy Fodors, and I did for our cruise, but I liked using the two books together. I would read Fodors, then go to DK for the pictures and maps. Fodors gives you the specifics on how to get to the the site you want to see, then the DK book gives you color pictures and maps so you can find the train station and/or know what to look for. I'll take the DK book with me on my trip, but I think I needed both to do the planning. Neither was sufficient on its own. Later in my research I bought the Rick Steves' Cruise book and it was far superior.
I ordered like four different books to get ideas for our Italy trip, each book has its own and all have been good, but Rick Steves ITALY is the one I settled on for taking with us. But this book is still good and full of information. each book has its own good things.
When we travel to a country we buy a travel guide from this series. They don't go out of date as easily as some. This replaced an earlier copy we must have loaned to someone. The book gives an overview of a country. Illustrations encourage. It is easy to read. When we travel we get a Frommers to help with restaurants and hotels. We take this because we prefer the way it shows us the country. We keep this one.
