I'm giving this book three stars because, while it provides a lot of human-computer interaction information that is from research, it reads terribly.This book is written in a style that makes it easy for the reader to get lost. Vocabulary words are not bolded. Essential ideas are not italicized. The authors use jargon from the human-computer interaction research field when regular vocabulary would suffice. The authors use vague examples that often state the obvious, and they don't do a good job of transitioning between ideas. As I read, I find myself skimming because the text is full of filler: many sentences are grammatically correct, but don't contribute any additional understanding to an adult human. (I realize that this review itself is vague, but I just want to give you my impressions).In a way, that's not surprising. Based on the book, much of Human-Computer Interaction is obvious ideas, like "When you give an interview, you have to develop questions", or "Set goals for what you want to learn through data gathering", or "Video is a way to record data". But it's also true that when obvious things are placed in a theoretical framework, new insights may arise. So I don't fault the book too much for stating the obvious in many places.Still, it astounds me that people have left 5-star reviews of this book. It amazes me that the publisher claims this book is "Popular with students and teachers alike". This is a book that forces you to parse dense text full of jargon and fluff. If you are a professor considering this textbook, please, look for another one. I refuse to believe that this is the best textbook the field has to offer.
I've bought this book three (3) times, among others, over the past 10 years. Used it as a text for my Interaction classes. It's good. But I'm extremely disappointed in it's "cash cow" status for the publisher. As for this latest edition, the price point is absurdly high considering the modest additions from the 3rd edition.
Excellent book and excellent field of study if you're into that sort of thing. I enjoy HCI and frankly didn't know that was a "thing", I thought I was just designing systems and interfaces. That HCI is a field of study and career path is encouraging and exciting!
For a textbook based on creating a positive user experience, they sure do miss the mark. This book could easily get the same, if not better, point across with about 200-300 less pages. It is full of useless over simplifications and, for a lack of a better word, fluff. The authors try to describe some ideas, such as describing user experience in metaphors saying, "just as swimming in water is to a fish." These useless pieces of information make reading this textbook a daunting and tedious task.

I would prefer to give this book 1 or 2 stars, but to be fair, I am giving it 3 stars. I just took an HCI Design class and this was the required book. Based on the course syllabus, this book was very unorganized in conveying specific information. It was more like a reference tool, rather than a learning tool. Also, there are many errors in the text, which I have already e-mailed to the author and publisher. These are content errors, not grammar and spelling. Anyway, I could see this being a useful book if you want a very broad understanding of HCI, but for more intricate knowledge, I give this book 2 thumbs down.
Great book used for doctoral level class.
A fairly easy and informative read.
