The only American to be honored at Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust Memorial), Fry saved the lives of thousands of refugees from the Nazis. Isenberg, a professor of English at Marist College (Women Who Love Men Who Kill), delivers a moving, workmanlike account of Fry's heroics. During the late '30s Fry, a Harvard-educated editor, journalist and teacher who was radicalized in 1935 when he witnessed Nazi troopers beating Jews in Berlin, wrote New York Times articles concerning the worsening situation in Europe, but didn't manage to increase public awareness. Under the auspices of the Emergency Rescue Committee, an organization of leftist journalists, religious leaders and activists, Fry traveled to Marseilles in August 1940 with $3,000 and a list of refugees, primarily Jewish, stuck in Vichy France, without money or visas. Isenberg details how, under cover of a humanitarian relief center, Fry helped well-known figures such as Marc Chagall, Andr‚ Breton, Hannah Arendt and many lesser-known people sneak across borders and escape. But his evident na‹vet‚ and combative personality sometimes worked against him: mistakenly assuming that most Americans would support his efforts, he alienated officials in the American Embassy who were unsympathetic to the plight of Jews and was forced to return home after a year. Fry's later years were marked by unhappiness in his personal life (he divorced his first wife and had a tempestuous relationship with the second) and destructive political disagreements with former colleagues. Isenberg's (English, Marist Coll.; Women Who Love Men Who Kill) biography of Varian Fry is part of a developing trend in Holocaust studies to focus attention on "rescuers." Fry, recently the subject of a Showtime docudrama, served as the point man of a New York-based rescue committee that helped a number of prominent European intellectuals and artists, such as Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt, reach the United States after the fall of France in June 1940. Isenberg describes Fry as a man driven later in life to achieve recognition for his efforts. After the war, he was unable to secure steady employment or maintain a stable family life, which Isenberg links to an obsession with his wartime experience. Although Isenberg provides ample context, describing the politics of U.S. immigration and the problems faced by those helping refugees escape from Hitler's Europe, she also periodically goes into excessive detail, at one point even telling us when Fry changed his shirt. Had seen the movie about Mr. Fry; had never heard of him and his work, I am ashamed to say. Was interested in learning more about his life and specifically more about his time in France helping refugees to flee Vichy France and the Germans. Book very detailed and the details are important! If writing style had been a little less didactic perhaps would have been an easier read. Still will recommend for anyone looking for more information about real men and women who risked their lives to save those of others and to learn once again the lesson that ALL of us must stand and act whenever we see something wrong.
I had never heard of Varian Fry until I worked an acrostic puzzle that contained a quote from this book. I do not know why this hero has not received more recognition. This is a compelling, inspiring book.

Varian Fry was the first American to be honored by Yad Vashem as "Righteous Among the Nations" for his work in Nazi Europe before America entered the war. Working in Vichy-governed France, Fry and his workers financially assisted 4,000 refugees and helped between 1,000 and 1,500 escape death and imprisonment. A Hero of Our Own is an important story, and more people should know about the courageous work Fry did against incredible odds. The book tells an exciting story, even if it is depressing, but then the whole story of persecution under the Nazis is depressing and horrific. Fry helped not only political refugees but also everyday Jewish people, even though that was not the mandate he was given when sent to Marseilles France by a nonprofit group in New York City. This book has two more important points to make, with which I was not familiar. First is the prevailing anti-semitism of French politicians, police and the populace in general. Under the Vichy government, the French aided and abetted the Nazis in turning over tens of thousands of Jews, and did it with determined prejudice and self-righteousness. I had no idea the French were so bad in this respect, and it certainly tempers my idea of the French fighting the Germans because of liberty, equality and fraternity for all - it just wasn't so. The second interesting point the book makes is how criminally obstinate the U.S. government, and in particular the State Department, was in not only ignoring the refugee problem and the plight of the Jews in Europe before and during the war, but how they were obstructionist in withholding help when they were given the facts over and over again. This is a home-grown chapter in the history of anti-semitism and is a shameful chapter in U.S. history. The author does an excellent job of detailing Varian Fry's character - he was certainly a hero but he was not without flaws. I didn't give the fifth star to this book because I felt it could have done a better job in providing photographs or drawings. So many people and places are mentioned in the book, and it would have been good to have faces and visuals to put to them. The book piled on the names of artists, philosophers and writers and it was hard to keep them straight because so many were ones I have never heard of before. One other small quibble - the footnotes were annoying in that they were mostly a recitation of the number a refugee had on Fry's list of who was to be rescued. I'd much rather have had a footnote that told if that person was rescued and what they did later in life with their freedom or if they were captured and how they died. If you like World War II history, this is a book that fills in a corner of the story that will round out your knowledge.
As a rabid WW Two kind of gal, there have been well-researched and written books re Nazi kidnapping/interred/tortured/gassed Jews, gypsies, homosexuals and political enemies which allude to Roosevelt and Churchill knowing about the death camps. Yet they refused to bomb the train tracks leading to Auswitch. Then, to read Isenberg's tale of Varian Fry, living in southern France, under the guise of an 'aid' group who secretly helped those 'at dire risk of arrest and deportation, found himself butting heads with the American Embassy and a US policy to go soft on Germany.Fry was a hero in the mold similar to Schindler and Wallenberg. Yet, most people do not know of his life-threatening efforts in securing escape from France: artists, writers, jews or their relatives. Though Fry possessed more 'vinegar than sugar' in his approach to getting what he needed to carry on his mission, that personality trait made his life, and his loved ones, suffer. Upon returning to the US work place, he didn't deserve the shunning he recieved from the US government officals who labeled him communist, unreliable. He often had to borrow money, or, even as a Harvard-educated and witty, intelligent writer, felt lucky to even get a job teaching high school history.A real eye-opener, yet ultimately a sad account.
This is the story of a real-life hero, Varian Fry, who saved hundreds of people, including Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Heinrich Blucher, from the jaws of the Holocaust. It is a real accomplishment for the author to have taken this enormous compendium of names, dates, facts, events and interviews and fashioned them into a story as compelling as any page-turner.It is a gripping tale of heroism. I wanted to know at each juncture how it would all resolve and was rooting for Fry to succeed despite all his frustrations. The episodic structure of the book is most effective in making it hang together as a narrative. Even the straight bits of historic information about what was really going on at that time are extremely enlightening and valuable. Fry's indomitable spirit through it all, in the face of one disappointment after another is inspiring. Even though his own life finally ended sadly, he still had, as we now have, thanks to him, the lasting impact of the happy endings of the lives he saved.
