I first encountered Charles Whites work at the Art Institute of Chicago, where they had an exhibit on the Chicago born artist that I decided to step into on a whim. I'm glad I did. The man was a phenomenal artist of many talents, and I love that this book allows you you bring home his work to enjoy again and again. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who appreciates art.
The reproductions of White's body of work are beautiful, the commentary is thorough and thought provoking. I saw the retrospective exhibit recently, but after reading though and observing each work of art in the coffee-table book, I feel like I have attended a seminar at a world-class art institution.
I was very moved by the exhibition of Charles White's work at the Museum of Modern Art and am glad that I finally know more about this great artist. He is one of the great 20th Century American artists. During his short lifetime he made a living from his artwork, was an influential teacher, and an activist. Unfortunately after Charles White passed away he was not included in art history books - he is now receiving deserved historical recognition. This is an excellent book with quality reproductions and essays.
Beautifully produced book relates to recent exhibition at Art Institute of Chicago which was jaw dropping.
